Small cloud vortex over Western Cape
New case from South African Weather Service!
An unusual cloud formation was detected through satellite imagery over South Africa’s Central Karoo in the morning of 23 April 2024, featuring a rotating low-level cloud with a vortex. This anomaly, typically observed in coastal regions, prompted further meteorological inquiry as it was now observed inland. This case explore this phenomenon by assessing the satellite imagery, synoptic situation of that morning, possible local effects that may have contributed, and if the South African Weather Service (SAWS) in-house models (Unified Models) were able to detect it.
