Limitations of MTG GeoColour RGB for low clouds over Western Cape

Kanyisa Makubalo from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), has explored the characteristics and limitations of the Meteosat-12 (MTG) GeoColour RGB, specifically regarding its ability to depict low-level clouds, particularly over the Western Cape region in South Africa (SA). These limitations are examined in depth through three studies, with a focus on cloud identification in the Western Cape during December 2024. It compares the GeoColour RGB with the Meteosat-11 Fog/Low Cloud RGB, drawing conclusions and offering recommendations based on the analysis.
GeoColour RGB is one of the new RGB products, that MTG Meteosat-12 satellite provides for meteorologists. You can view GeoColour and some other new RGBs for example through EUMETView. This link will take you to near real time Meteosat-12 RGB products.
