Training event in Casablanca on EUMETSAT data access

EUMETSAT new generation satellite products are offering a big amount of new, valuable satellite data for operational users in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. With the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) products now being operational, it is important to make these products available for forecasters.

It is for this reason why Direction General de la Meteorologie (DGM) in Morocco hosted a training course in Casablanca for meteorological trainers from five Centres of Excellence (CoE). By achieving skills in using the new generation satellite data for training meteorologists in Africa and in the Middle East, these trainers can also help the wide forecaster community to apply the new data in their daily work.

The trainers came from four African CoEs (Morocco, Niger, Kenya, South Africa) and from CoE Oman, reinforced with participants from other institutions from the region. The participants learned how to search for and download relevant satellite products from the EUMETSAT Catalogue, gaining practical experience in creating and displaying satellite imagery for specific regions of interest. This imagery was then used for various purposes, such as for creating case studies, simulations and other training material. The participants used these skills to real-world scenarios, and produced tailored visual materials.

This training event coincided with the launch of the new MTG satellite, MTG-S1. This new sounding satellite will provide even more exciting data for the meteorological users, offering soundings of atmospheric temperature and humidity for the first time from geostationary orbit.

Viewing event in Casablanca of the MTG-S1 launch from Cape Canaveral on 1 July.
